Box Score
The Bruins traveled to Columbia, South Carolina for a matchup with Columbia International University on Tuesday night. The Bruins were coming off a difficult road loss to Montreat College 1-0 last Wednesday. The CIU Rams started off the season on fire winning five of their first six games. Their most recent match was a loss against Bluefield College on Friday night. The Bruins and Rams met twice last season with the Bruins winning 4-0 in Greenville, and the two teams playing to a 1-1 draw. The stage was set as these two in-state rivals took the field for the match.
From the opening kickoff, the Bruins and Rams played with high intensity with both trying to establish pace in the game. The Bruins have struggled recently with being able to finish opportunities and the same was true in this match as several golden opportunities sailed just wide. In the 28th minute, the Bruins were called with a foul inside their own box giving the Rams a penalty kick. Daniel Miele capitalized on the Bruins' mistake to net the PK and give the Rams a 1-0 lead. The Bruins tried desperately to draw even before the half, but as the buzzer sounded the Bruins were trailing the Rams 1-0 at the break.Â
"We created several excellent chances tonight but lacked the final finish," Coach McCormick said. Â
In the second half, the Bruins went on the offensive trying to stretch the defense to generate runs for their strikers. The emphasis on offense left some areas exposed and CJ Jones took advantage to net a goal putting the Rams up 2-0. The Bruins regrouped and tried to get back into the game. With a two-goal advantage, the Rams fortified their defensive strategy to keep the Bruins from getting open looks. The Rams blocked every offensive opportunity for the Bruins and kept the clean sheet intact. As the buzzer sounded, the Bruins failed to find the back of the net in a 2-0 loss.Â
"We will learn from this game and come out prepatred for the match Saturday," Coach McCormick said. "Although we need to step it up on the road, we look forward to the great support we will have at home for the next match."Â
With the loss, the Bruins fall to 3-4 on the season and have dropped their second straight match. The Bruins will play their next match on Saturday afternoon as they welcome Concordia College at 4:00 p.m. The team will have the benefit of playing six of their next seven matches at home.Â
