The sun was high in the South Carolina sky as the Bruins welcomed the Concordia College Hornets on Saturday afternoon. The Bruins were looking to get back on track after the team lost their last two matches. The most recent loss came on Tuesday night as the team suffered a tough 2-0 loss against Columbia International. The Hornets played against Columbia International on Friday night and suffered a 4-1 loss. The Bruin faithful were in full voice to welcome their team back home after two weeks.
From the opening kickoff, the Bruins fed off the energy of the crowd and took possession. The team executed crisp passing and were able to get open looks throughout the opening minutes. In the 4th minute, Bruins' forward
Matt Moore headed a goal into the net after a beautiful cross by Caleb McKisic to put the Bruins up 1-0. The Bruins continued to keep the pressure on as they fired 11 shots throughout the first half. The defense stood strong and allowed very few Hornet opportunities. At the end of the first half, the Bruins had a slim 1-0 lead.
"Our movement was a little bit better and our guys used some good combination play to create some good looks," Coach McCormick said. "We came out well in the first half I thought, but I think we need to be more consistent overall."
In the second half, the Bruins played smart hoping to protect their lead. The team loaded up on the defensive end, and played great in transition to move the ball into the attacking third. Just five minutes into the second period,
Eric Moisant scored off the assist from Matt Moore and Stephen Lovelace to put the Bruins up 2-0. "I was pushing up the field and I was just waiting and hoping Lovelace would get the shot off and I was just in the right place at the right time," Bruins' midfielder Eric Moisant said.
With the lead, the Bruins kept up the pressure but focused more on keeping the Hornets from getting open looks. The defense squelched every offensive opportunity and kept pressure off of goalie Joseph Wooster. When the final buzzer sounded, the Bruins had completed the clean sheet and won the match 2-0.
"Our energy level could have been better consistently across the board for all 90 minutes," Coach McCormick said. "Just making good simple decisions to help us keep the ball."
Matt Moore led the way for the Bruins with one goal and one assist, while Eric Moisant recorded his first goal of the season. Joseph Wooster held on to complete his second clean sheet of the season as the Bruins got back to .500 and are now 4-4 on the season. The team will face a tough test next Thursday night as they welcome in Truett-McConnel. The Bruins will benefit from their schedule over the next few weeks as five of their next six matches are at home.
