Box Score The Bruins soccer team was on the road on Saturday afternoon as they battled the St. Andrews University Knights in Laurinburg, North Carolina. Although the Bruins would have the lead early on, the Knights used two second half goals to come away with a 3-2 victory handing the Bruins their third straight loss.
The Bruins came out strong in the opening minutes and got an impressive goal from Travis Woodham in the 22nd minute to give the Bruins a 1-0 advantage. Less than 10 minutes later, the Knights got the equalizer off of a goal from Manu Escalera to bring it even at 1-1.
The Bruins did a great job of possessing in the first half, and Jared Simmons capitalized on his opportunity in the 39th minute to give the Bruins a 2-1 lead at the half. "We took advantage of our chances on offense," Coach Jesse McCormick said.
In the second half, the Knights came out strong and took possession early on. SAU got the equalizer just three minutes into the second half to bring the game to 2-2. With the game tied, the two teams looked to find the upper hand. The Bruins struggled to keep possession in the second half, and the Knights would make them pay.
In the 66th minute, Gonzalo Sanchez gave the Knights the lead with a great goal to put the Bruins down 3-2. Despite their efforts, the Bruins couldn't find the equalizer as the team fell to St. Andrews University 3-2 on the road.
"St. Andrews really came out strong in the second half and controlled the possession," Coach Jesse McCormick said. "We needed to be stronger on the ball and do a better job of playing 1 and 2 touch,"
With the loss, the Bruins fall to 5-9 on the season. Travis Woodham and Jared Simmons each scored an unassisted goal, while Joseph Wooster made 5 saves on the night. Next up, the Bruins will be back home for their final home game of the season on Monday night. The team will welcome Chowan University. This will be Senior night for the Bruins as the team will honor the two seniors on this year's team.
