Cougars Edge Bruins 1-0

Late goal by Sikes hands BJU 3rd straight loss

Box Score
A late goal by James Sikes gave the Clearwater Christian College Cougars a 1-0 win over Bob Jones University on Saturday night. This makes the third straight loss for the Bruins this year. The team has been shutout in each of their first three games. "We just have to be more consistent and disciplined in our play," Bruins coach Jesse McCormick said. The Cougars and Bruins met twice during the 2013 season with the teams splitting the season series at 1-1. The stage was set for the next chapter of this rivalry as the Bruins and Cougars took the field in Clearwater, Florida.

As the match began, the two teams went back and forth with both trying to set up their offensive progressions. Both teams had good scoring opportunities, but each shot wouldn't find the back of the net. As the first half ended, the Cougars and Bruins were locked in a 0-0 battle.

In the second half, both teams looked for that one play that would break the scoring drought. In the 65th minute, the Cougars got that break as Jason Sikes bent a beautiful high-arching shot over the outstretched arms of Joseph Wooster to give Clearwater the 1-0 advantage.

With time winding down, the Bruins desperately looked for the equalizer and worked their combination play to move into the attacking third. Ryan Beadles had a near goal late in the match, but it sailed wide. The Bruins had two free kick opportunities in the closing minutes, but the Clearwater defense successfully cleared away the threats as CCC held on for a 1-0 victory over BJU.

"Offensively we're still working to develop a rhythm," Coach McCormick said. "We have the ability and players to score goals but we need to get everyone on the same page."

With the loss, the Bruins fall to 0-3 on the season. The team will begin a four-game home stand over the next few weeks. Next up, the Bruins will welcome the Montreat College Cavaliers to Greenville on Tuesday night.
