as the Bruins defeat Montreat 4-1.The Bruins came into the match on Tuesday night riding a three-game losing streak and riding a streak of 270 minutes without a goal. Montreat College entered Tuesday's match with a 2-2 record coming off back-to-back overtime games in which the Cavaliers won one and lost one. The Bruins were looking to find a way into the scoring column and ultimately pick up a win as they took the field in front of the Bruin faithful at Alumni Stadium.
From the opening kick, the Bruins came out with much more intensity and energy than in previous matches. The team was able to use great combination play from Ryan McCarty and John Wilson to generate great lanes to attack. The team would get a near-goal as a free-kick gave the Bruins a chance just outside the box. Hoping to take advantage, McCarty fired a shot towards the net while the Cavalier players were getting setup. The shot sailed just wide to keep the score 0-0.Â
The Bruins finally broke through as in the 6th minute of play
McCarty found AJ Redlinger for a wide open goal to put the Bruins up 1-0. Just seven minutes later, the Cavaliers came roaring back as Gavin Kneeshaw gained open space and fired a beautiful shot into the back of the net to tie the game at 1-1.
Both teams looked to gain the advantage as each traded great scoring opportunities throughout the remainder of the half. The horn signaled a break for these two teams with the score 1-1.Â
"We did a much better job of keeping the ball and moving the ball quickly tonight," Coach McCormick said. "We need to continue to work on our 1 vs. 1 defending as we were diving a bit too much." Â
In the second half, the Bruins were able to establish control and moved to attack. The transition from midfield to attacking third was seemingly flawless as the team was able to work into open lanes to score. In the 61st minute, a rebound opportunity found its way to
Will Peek who scored the goal to make it 2-1 for the Bruins.Â
Montreat refused to go away as the Cavaliers looked to gain the equalizer. This half, the Bruins defense stepped up big and cleared out every offensive threat. In the 86th minute,
Ryan Woodham tapped in another rebound opportunity to make it 3-1. Less than a minute later,
Garrett Martin sealed the deal for the Bruins with a beautiful bending shot top shelf to make it a 4-1 victory for the Bruins.Â
"The guys went out there and did well," Coach McCormick said. "We've been working on some things in practice and our guys really stepped it up today." Â
Garrett Martin, Will Peek and Ryan Woodham and AJ Redlinger each scored their first goal in a Bruins uniform while John Wilson and Ryan McCarty picked up the assists for the night. Goalie Joseph Wooster made 8 saves to help the Bruins come away with the victory. With the win, the Bruins move to 1-3 on the season. The team is in the midst of a four-game home stand.
