Box Score The Bob Jones University Bruins got back to their winning ways on Saturday night with a 5-0 shutout over William Peace University in Raleigh, North Carolina. The team improves to 2-1 on the season.
"We did a much better job of possession and our midfield was a big part of that," Coach Jesse McCormick said. "We had a great team effort all-around in this game."
The Bruins and Peace Pacers were delayed by rain for the start of the game, and when play finally began the two teams came out slow as they adjusted to the field conditions. The Bruins were able to work into the attacking third and generate several chances in the early stages.
In the 17th minute, AJ Redlinger scored on a rocket shot just outside the 18 to put the Bruins on the board first 1-0. Less than a minute later, the Bruins struck again as Matt Moore scored off a beautiful pass from Stephen Grider to increase the lead 2-0. Defensively, the Bruins didn't allow the Pacers to find open looks as the team stood strong. The Bruins had a few more opportunities to increase their lead, but at the half BJU was up 2-0.
As the second half began, the Peace Pacers looked to climb back into the game and had several shots on frame to open the half. The Bruins countered and worked their way back into position to score. In the 58th minute, John Wilson scored the goal off of an assist from Ryan McCarty to put the Bruins up 3-0. The team refused to quit and continued to pound the Pace net with shots.
Matt Moore found the back of the net in the 66th minute to further increase the Bruins lead 4-0. In the 72nd minute, John Wilson scored his second goal of the night to put the exclamation point on a great offensive output by the team. The final whistle handed the Bruins a 5-0 win over William Peace University.
"We started out a bit slow but in the 2nd half we did a much better job," Coach McCormick said. "We had some good moments of combination play to get good looks on goal."
John Wilson led the team with two goals while Matt Moore scored two goals and had one assist. AJ Redlinger scored as well with his 1st goal of the 2015 season. The Bruins outshot the Peace Pacers 13-5 throughout the match. With the win, the Bruins improve to 2-1 on the season. Next up, the Bruins will play their home opener against St. Andrews University on Thursday night.
