Box Score
Despite having a 2-0 lead in the second half, the Bruins couldn't stop the rally by the Montreat College Cavaliers as the team fell 4-2 on Tuesday night at Alumni Stadium. "We had some good things but then one or two mistakes and we started to get flustered by those mistakes which cost us," Head Coach Jesse McCormick said. "Mentally we have to be more mature. This is college soccer and we have to stay sharp."
The Bruins gave their best effort, but it just wasn't enough in the end. Early on in the game, it looked as though the Bruins were going to run away with the contest. The team came out with several nice runs, and executed crisp passing in the midfield. In the 18th minute, Jesse Rush put the Bruins on the board as he made an incredible trap with his chest and volleyed the ball past the Cavs keeper for a 1-0 lead. Both teams had numerous shots on goal throughout the half, but neither were able to find the back of the net as the Bruins took a 1-0 lead into the break.
At the start of the second half, the Bruins came roaring out of the gate to double their lead. Garrett Martin won the ball in the box and slid a centering pass into the box where Stephen Grider finished the play to put the team up 2-0. While the Bruins celebrated, the Cavaliers regrouped and came charring back into the game. Raphael Duarte sliced through the Bruins defense and calmly finished a ball into the corner of the net to cut into the lead 2-1. But the Cavs weren't done as minutes later Bruins defenseman Hany Wahba was called for a foul in the box awarding Montreat with a PK. Cavalier Dale McClellan calmly played the ensuing penalty shot past Andrew Kester to tie the game 2-2.
With momentum on their side, the Cavaliers continued to press on the attack and tallied a third goal in impressive fashion as Duarte juggled the ball three times through the box and scored to give Montreat a 3-2 lead. The Bruins tried desperately to work the ball into the attacking third, but their combinations were turned aside by the Cavaliers defense. Montreat put the nail in the Bruins coffin when Henrique Cordoso broke away on a counterattack and smashed a top corner goal to put the Cavaliers up 4-2. Despite their attempt at a comeback, the final buzzer handed the Bruins their 4th straight loss as the team fell 4-2 to Montreat College.
"As a team we have to believe in each other and be more of a cohesive unit in trying to do what we're trying to do," Coach McCormick said. "We've got to get better every match. We have to start taking steps forward and stop treading water and take steps forward to improve."
Jesse Rush and Stephen Grider each scored their first goal of the 2016 season while Garrett Martin tallied the lone assist for the Bruins. Andrew Kester made 5 saves on the night as the Bruins fall to 0-4 on the season. Next up, the team will welcome Pensacola Christian College on Friday night at 8 p.m.
