Despite striking first, the Bruins weren't able to hold off St. Andrews University as the Knights rallied for a 3-1 victory over Bob Jones University on Tuesday evening. "We created some good chances going forward but defensively we were having trouble keeping our shape," Head Coach Jesse McCormick said.
The Bruins were coming off an emotional win on Friday night as the team scored three goals in the final ten minutes of the match to defeat Pensacola Christian College 4-1. On this night, it was the Knights who would provide a late rally for the victory.
In the opening minutes, the Bruins picked up where they left off on Friday by taking it right to the Knights defense. Stephen Grider and Jesse Rush created several chances early on as the Bruins continued to pressure the net. Grider would put the Bruins on top in the 9th minute of play as he rifled a shot past Knights goalie Valentino Parini to give BJU a 1-0 lead. Grider continued to be a force for the Bruins offensively throughout the half as he created numerous opportunities in the attacking third. Unfortunately, the Bruins weren't able to capitalize as they clung to a one-goal lead.
As the half was drawing to a close, the Knights would find the equalizer as Julio Rico received the pass from Manu Posada and buried it just past Andrew Kester to tie the game 1-1. Both teams had their chances in the remaining moments of the half, but the teams would go into the break knotted up 1-1.
In the second half, the Bruins came out looking to climb back on top. This time, it was the Knights who came out strong in the opening minutes as they continued to create scoring opportunities. Bruins keeper Andrew Kester had several key saves for the Bruins throughout the match as the game remained tied. With under 17 minutes to play, it was looking like déjà vu for the Bruins as they looked to close out the match strong. But it wasn't meant to be as the Knights scored twice in the remaining minutes to come away with a 3-1 victory over Bob Jones University.
With the loss, the Bruins fall to 1-5 on the season. The Knights outshot the Bruins 21-13 on the night, but the Bruins were able to put nine of their shots on frame. Next up, the team will be on the road again as they battle Emmanuel College on September 27.
