The Lady Bruins again found themselves in overtime on Tuesday night. This time, the team couldn't get the win as Piedmont College scored in the second overtime to win 2-1. With the loss, the Lady Bruins fall to 7-5-2 on the season.
"Piedmont is a very strong team with a lot of depth," Bruins Head Coach Chris Carmichael said. "They are very quick and technically and tactically organized. Our team played incredibly hard but we just came up short tonight."
Rainy weather would influence the match as both teams looked to get used to the wet conditions early on in the match. The Lions were able to generate more scoring opportunities in the first half, but Bruins' keeper Angelina Martin played strong with several saves. As the halftime buzzer sounded, the two teams ended the half as they began it tied 0-0.
In the second half, the Lions finally found the hole in the Bruins defensive armor. Less than five minutes into the half, the Lions scored on a corner kick after the set piece skipped across the box and Natalie Munoz finished the play to put Piedmont up 1-0.
The Bruins refused to back down as they knew they needed to get more going offensively. They found the equalizer on the foot of Marissa Allebach in the 62nd minute of play. After being awarded a free kick, Allebach rifled a well-placed shot into the back of the net from about 40 yards out. Her goal tied the match at 1-1. Despite several chances from both teams to close out regulation time, the buzzer sent both teams into overtime tied 1-1.
The Lions came out strong in the overtime period while they limited the Bruins offensively. Still, the Bruins almost ended the match as Grace Hoffmann re-directed a deflected shot which was blocked by the Lions defense. After the first ten minute overtime, the score remained 1-1. In the second overtime, the Lions found an opportunity and seized it as they scored off another corner kick. Sarah Weber headed home the goal to give the Lions a 2-1 win.
"We had our chances to win tonight," Coach Carmichael said. "Again, this was a very strong team and it's no wonder they are near the top of their conference. We're going to keep working hard and getting ready for our matches coming up."
The Bruins were out shot in the match 27-8 but the on-goal margin was only 9-4. Angelina Martin made 7 saves on the night while Marissa Allebach notched her first goal of the 2018 season. Next up, the Bruins will be on the road on Thursday for a matchup against region-rival Trinity Baptist College in Jacksonville, Florida.
