The regular season didn't end well for the Bruins soccer team as Georgia Gwinnett swarmed the Bruins with nine second-half goals to shutout BJU 11-0 on Friday night in Lawrenceville, Georgia. The loss was the widest margin of defeat for the Bruins in their seven-year history as the team falls to 5-11-1 to finish the regular season.
"We had some real positives in the first half in staying organized defensively and at times playing out of pressure," Bruins Head Coach Jesse McCormick said. "They are easily the best team we've seen this year. We're looking forward to the opportunities we'll have at regionals this week."
The Grizzlies came into the match at 7-5-1 and were riding a hot streak as the team had won four of their last five and three in a row. It was senior night for the Grizzlies and the fans were out in full voice to send their seniors off with a win.
From the opening kickoff, the Bruins knew they would be in for a tough matchup as the Grizzlies went right to work and moved the ball into the attacking third. It didn't take long for the Grizzlies to find the back of the net as Toni Tiente scored to make it 1-0. The Grizzlies would add another goal with just minutes remaining in the first half as the Bruins trailed 2-0 at the break.
In the second half, things went from bad to worse for the Bruins as the Grizzlies kept the pressure on. A goal just seven minutes into the half increase the GGC lead to 3-0. From there, the flood gates opened as the Grizzlies continued to find the back of the net. When the final buzzer sounded, the Bruins suffered a tough loss in an 11-0 defeat.
The Bruins will await seeding for the NCCAA DII South Region tournament which begins next week in Jacksonville, Florida.
