Bruins Upset Top-Ranked Eagles 1-0

The Bob Jones University Bruins picked up a big win on Saturday afternoon as Karl Walker scored on a penalty kick in extra time to give the team a 1-0 victory over region-rival Trinity Baptist College.

"It was a great team effort today," Bruins Head Coach Jesse McCormick said. "We had good possession and created some chances. Our guys played hard in the hot and humid weather."

It was the first-ever victory for the Bruins on the Eagles home field in Jacksonville, Florida. Coming into the match, the Bruins had fallen in the NCCAA DII rankings to #6 overall. The Eagles came into Saturday's match ranked #1 in NCCAA DII.

From the opening kickoff, both teams went back and forth with no real chances early on. The Bruins were able to do a good job in keeping possession as the team was able to open lanes in the attacking third. Defensively, the Bruins also did well as they limited the Eagles chances on frame. The two teams were evenly matched and it showed as they ended the first forty-five minutes of play tied 0-0.

In the second half, both teams knew one goal would probably be the difference and it showed. The Bruins were able to garner more attacks as the team looked for the go-ahead goal. Isaac Landry protected the clean sheet with several nice saves as the match drew to a close. With no goals in regulation time, the Bruins and Eagles prepared for overtime.

The Bruins came out strong in the first overtime period as the team moved the ball into the attacking third. Sebastian Sulik found a lane and broke through the defense for an opportunity to score. The Eagles were called for a foul in the box which awarded the Bruins a PK. Bruins' captain Karl Walker took a confident strike and buried it in the back of the net as the team stormed the field in celebration of a 1-0 overtime win.

"It was exciting to see our perseverance pay off," Coach McCormick said. "We look forward to taking this momentum into the coming week."

The Eagles outshot the Bruins 22-10, including a 13-2 margin on frame. Isaac Landry had 13 saves for the Bruins in the net to nab his 3rd clean sheet of the season. With the win, the Bruins move to 3-7-1 on the season but the team is now 2-1 in region play.

Next up, the Bruins will be back home for two matches at Alumni Stadium this week. First, the team will welcome Truett-McConnell University on Tuesday night before welcoming Kentucky Christian University on Saturday for the homecoming match. The team will also celebrate senior night next Saturday.
