Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | by Jonny Gamet

Another Slow Start Hurts Lady Bruins as Team Drops 3rd Straight

Despite scoring just five points in the first quarter, the Lady Bruins basketball team roared back and nearly completed the comeback falling to Huntingdon College 71-64 on Saturday in LaGrange, Georgia. The loss marks the third in the row for the Bruins as the team falls to 1-5 to start the season.

"It isn't pleasant to look at the fact that we've lost three games in a row," Bruins Head Coach Mike LeViere said. "Once again, we started reaelly slow and just beat ourselves. We took too many hurried shots and just pushed too hard. We made unforced errors as we simply tried too hard to make something happen."

The Lady Bruins played their third game in as many days as they took the court against the Hawks. As the game began, the Bruins couldn't seem to buy a basket while the Hawks started on a 10-0 run. The Bruins were held scoreless for over seven minutes of the first quarter with Kylee Leffew finally scoring a layup with just under three minutes to go in the quarter. The Bruins played well defensively and didn't let the game slip away down 15-5 after the first quarter.

In the second quarter, the Hawks extended their lead thanks to back to back three point shots to lead 21-9. Gracen Ledford and Madison Shupe answered with threes for the Bruins as they went into the half still trailing by ten at 27-17.

As the second half began, the Bruins hoped to shake off their shooting struggles and climb back into the game. Sydney Bedsaul hit a three for the Bruins, but the team couldn't seem to close the gap as the Hawks maintained a double-digit advantage. As the buzzer sounded, the Bruins knew they would need a great effort in the final frame as they trailed 53-40.

With one quarter to play, the Bruins came out strong as Sarah Thomsen and Delaney Edwards each knocked down a three to spark a rally as the Bruins trailed 54-46. The Hawks were able to keep the lead thanks to good free throw shooting as the game began to draw to a close. Although the Bruins closed the gap late, they team ran out of time again as they fell to Huntington 71-64.

"It may be a while until our record reflects the positive things that are happening," Coach LeViere said. "This team has a lot of upside and will continue to improve as long as we keep focusing on the things we can control."

Rachel Clark led the Bruins with 12 points on the day, but was the only player to score in double-figures for the team. The Bruins lost the rebounding margin 35-42. Although the team struggled shooting in the first half, the Bruins shot 7-8 from behind the arc to close out the game.

Next up, the Bruins will play their home opener on Monday night as they welcome Brevard College to the Davis Field House.
