The Bruins men's basketball team suffered another tough loss at home on Tuesday night as they were defeated 95-39 by Emmanuel College. With the loss, the Bruins fall to 0-6 to open the 2018-18 season.
Emmanuel jumped out to an early 10-0 lead in the first three minutes of play and they carried that same momentum throughout the first half. It took almost five minutes for the Bruins to get their first points as Jayson Barnhart finally ended the scoring drought. The Lions continued to stretch their lead as they went into halftime with a comfortable 48-17 lead. Kendrick Colvin led the way in the first half scoring 15 points and finishing the game with 27. Derek Vandiver's three point shooting was also key for Emmanuel. The Lions combined to hit 11 three pointers in the game.
"Their perimeter shooting played a big part in the win," Bruins Head Coach Burton Uwarow said. "Our perimeter defense needs to improve as the season goes along."
It was more of the same in the second half as Emmanuel continued their dominance on both sides of the floor. Defensively they finished with 10 steals leading to several fast break points. Allowing offensive rebounds also played into the defeat for the Bruins, as 15 of Emmanuel's 31 rebounds were offensive. The Lions also dominated inside as they scored 48 points in the paint on the night. As the final buzzer sounded, the Bruins fell to the Lions 95-39.
An off-night shooting and costly turnovers plagued the Bruins all night long as they finished with 17 turnovers in the game. "If we are going to have success, we have to limit our turnovers," Coach Uwarow said. "We cannot continue to beat ourselves."
Jayson Barnhart and Quiyante Burroughs led the Bruins offensively each scoring eleven points. Freshmen Jon Allen and Stone Champion each grabbed five rebounds, but the Bruins shot just 18% from three-point range for the game and 25% overall in the loss.
Next up, the Bruins will be back on the road for their next game on December 1st as they take on Trinity Baptist College in Jacksonville, Florida.
