Lady Bruins Power Past Wolves for First Win of the Season

Abby Davis' strong second half performance fueled the Lady Bruins to their first win of the season on Thursday night as the team defeated Wesleyan College 3-1. The team dominated possession in the first half leading to several scoring opportunities as they outshot the Wolves 12 to 2 in the first half, and 29 to 8 for the match.

Ten minutes into the match junior midfielder Kristyn Rygh intercepted a pass in the box, but Wesleyan's goalkeeper Kayleigh Buie was able to make a spectacular diving save. In the 32nd minute freshman forward Ali Sigmon scored the first goal of the match for the Bruins, breaking past the Wesleyan defense and placing the ball in the back of the net.

With under one minute left in the half, senior midfielder Grace Hoffman's shot went off the top cross bar and right to the feet of sophomore midfielder Becca Cabrera. Cabrera's rebound shot opportunity went right at the goalkeeper Kayleigh Blue as she made the save. At the break, the Lady Bruins held a 1-0 lead.

The Bruins didn't waste any time getting back to work as they added to their lead. Just over a minute into the half, junior midfielder Bailey Martin's through ball pass set up senior forward Abby Davis perfectly for the goal, giving BJU a 2-0 lead.

"We possessed the ball very well in the second half," Bruins Head Coach Chris Carmichael said. "It was an all-around great team performance."

Just minutes later, Davis scored her 50th career goal to give the BJU Lady Bruins a 3-0 lead. Davis is the all-time leading scorer in the program's history.

Freshman goalkeeper Sarah Lloyd had a great game herself with four saves, but her hopes for a clean-sheet ended in the 68th minute when Kourtney Mydlowski scored for Wesleyan College. Nadia Al-Shahabi's shot attempt deflected off goalkeeper Sarah Lloyd, and Mydlowski was there to tap it in for the goal as the score was 3-1. The Bruins had several scoring chances in the remainder of the match but the buzzer ended the game at 3-1 as BJU captured their first win of the season.

"The first win of the season is always difficult," said Coach Carmichael. "I was proud of the way we competed tonight."

Abby Davis had two goals on the night while freshman Ali Sigmon scored her second goal of the season. Next up, the team will host Oglethorpe University on Monday night at Alumni Stadium.
