The Lady Bruins suffered a tough road loss on Friday evening as the team fell to Greensboro College 2-0 in Greensboro, North Carolina. With the loss, the team drops to 2-4-1 on the season.
"We managed to hold this game to a respectable score but didn't help ourselves with a lot of sloppy play and an inability to possess well," Bruins Head Coach Chris Carmichael said. "Although we created a few goal scoring opportunities we were outplayed on this day by a very strong Greensboro College team. They have unbelievable depth."
The Bruins came into the match on the heels of back to back wins over Wesleyan College and Oglethorpe University. The team has been gaining momentum after a difficult start to the season. Today, the Bruins would face off against the Pride who came into the match at a perfect 5-0.
In the opening minutes, the Bruins had trouble gauging their speed of play because of the turf and it showed as passes were faster than usual. The Pride were able to move towards the Bruins net as they generated several open looks early on. Angelina Martin came up with several saves in her first full game back after injury.
Offensively, the Bruins couldn't seem to get anything going as they generated just one shot in the first half. Fortunately, the Bruins defense played well and held the Pride at bay as the first half ended tied 0-0.
In the second half, both teams came out looking to score the game's first goal. The Pride struck first as they scored in the 63rd minute off a creative give and go combination which freed up Anna Rae Porcelli for the goal. The Bruins tried to counter, but the Greensboro defense continued to step into passing lanes to thwart scoring chances.
With the match coming to a close, the Bruins tried to find the equalizer. Instead, the Pride were able to add to their lead as Samantha Whipp scored to make it 2-0. The Bruins would never recover as the match ended 2-0.
"We had a hard time keeping the ball today and something we need to sharpen up on," Coach Carmichael said. "But the girls worked incredibly hard today and although not the result we were hoping for we did learn some things that will be helpful going into tomorrow's match."
Angelina Martin was tested all match but the freshman came up strong with 8 saves on the day. The Bruins were outshot in the match 16-3 including a 10-1 margin on goal. Next up, the Bruins will be back in action tomorrow as they face Piedmont International University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
