The Lady Bruins began the second half of the season on Wednesday afternoon with a road game against Warner University. Unfortunately, the Bruins didn't start off the game well as they fell behind early and never recovered in an 84-44 loss. With the loss, the team falls to 6-10 on the season.
"We just couldn't seem to get into a groove offensively and kept beating ourselves," Bruins Head Coach Mike LeViere said. "We let their physicality really affect us. We had 16 turnovers in the first half and by the time we adjusted to the type of game it was going to be, it was over."
From the opening tip, the Royals came out strong as they opened the game on a 14-2 run. The Bruins struggled to find their rhythm offensively as the pressure defense by the Royals turned into fast break points on the other end. The Royals didn't let up as they took a commanding 22-7 lead into the second quarter of play.
In the second frame, the Bruins were able to slowly chip away at the lead thanks to trips to the free throw line. Still, the Bruins couldn't seem to slow the Royals as Warner continued to stretch their lead. As the halftime buzzer sounded, the Bruins found themselves in a hole down 47-25.
As the second half began, the Royals had another hot start to a half as they used a 7-0 run to begin the quarter to stretch their lead. The Bruins couldn't seem to buy a basket as the team shot just 16% from the floor in the second half. Turnovers also continued to be a struggle as the Bruins trailed 64-31 at the end of the third quarter.
The lead was too much to overcome, but the Bruins were determined to have a stronger showing in the fourth quarter. The team was able to get to the free throw line, but again shooting struggles hampered the team's ability to close the gap. As a result, the Bruins fell to the Royals 84-44.
"We had a couple of really good practices this week so I am disappointed for our team," Coach LeViere said. "They worked hard but we couldn't seem to get out of our own way. We'll regroup and get a chance to get back on track on Saturday."
Sarah Thomsen led the Bruins with 11 points but was the only player on the team to score in double figures. The Bruins shot just 22% from the floor while committing 27 turnovers throughout the game.
Next up, the Bruins will play a region matchup on Saturday afternoon as the face Johnson University of Florida in Kissimmee, Florida. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m.
