The Lady Bruins used a big fourth quarter to snap a four-game losing streak as the team defeated Toccoa Falls College 86-54 on Tuesday night. With the win, the Bruins move to 7-13 on the season and 3-2 in region play.
The Screaming Eagles cut the lead down to just five in the middle of the third quarter, but the Bruins were able to outscore the Eagles 26-7 in the final frame to help secure the victory. The Bruins used significant production off the bench, as the second unit produced 52 of the team's 86 points in the game.
Although the Bruins struggled shooting in the first quarter, the team was able to get to the free throw line and play good defense as they forged a 13-11 lead. Key contributions off the bench from Madison Shupe, Jessiann Wiedmann and Charsie Johnson helped the Bruins find their rhythm on offense in the second quarter.
The Bruins were able to push the lead to as many as sixteen in the second quarter thanks to several key baskets by Johnson. The Eagles clawed their way back into the game thanks to the hot shooting of Jessica Jackson as they trailed BJU 37-26 at the half.
The Eagles remained hot from behind the three point line in the second half cutting the lead down to as little as five. But every time the Eagles made a run, the Bruins had an answer.
The depth of the Bruins began to wear on the Eagles in the fourth quarter. Wiedmann and Grayson Ledford were able to use their quickness to beat their defenders off the dribble and generate high percentage looks for their teammates. As a result, the Bruins poured it on as they defeated Toccoa Falls 86-54.
"Although we did not shoot the ball very well tonight, our defense and our rebounding made a difference in tonight's game," Bruins Head Coach Mike LeViere said.
The Bruins dominated the rebounding margin 52-29 which generated 22 second-chance points. The Bruins were able to hold the Eagles to just over 30% shooting. The Bruins were led by Madison Shupe's twenty-two points and five rebounds while Kylee Leffew added fourteen points on 5-8 shooting while also snagging 9 rebounds. Jessiann Wiedmann added 11 and 7 rebounds while Grayson Ledford and Charsie Johnson added ten points a piece.
Next up, the Lady Bruins will return to action Friday night as the team plays host to familiar foe Johnson University of Tennessee. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.
