Madison Shupe hit a three-point shot with just a second left to play as the Bruins picked up a big road win on Tuesday night over Covenant College 56-53 in Lookout Mountain, Georgia. Delaney Edwards had a monster game for the Bruins with 14 points, 12 rebounds and 4 steals in the win.
"It was a really good game for us," Bruins Head Coach Mike LeViere said. "Everyone stepped up for us and contributed to help us get the win. We played well defensively and did a good job with our shot selection."
The Bruins came into the game in the midst of a four game losing streak. The team looked to get back on track but knew they would be in for a tough road test as they faced the Scots who came into the game at 3-6 overall.
From the opening tip, the Bruins came out strong as they took an early lead in the game thanks to baskets by Delaney Edwards and Kylee Leffew. Madison Shupe hit a three as the Bruins jumped out to an 11-4 lead. The Scots came back near the end of the quarter but Bruins led 13-9 at the end of the first.
Jessiann Wiedmann opened the scoring for the Bruins in the second quarter as she hit a three but the Scots came right back with a run to take an 18-16 lead. The Bruins came right back as a pair of threes by sophomore Bethany Daulton and a three by Delaney Edwards helped the team regain the lead. The Bruins closed out the half with momentum as they took a 31-23 lead into the break.
As the second half began, the Bruins came out looking to extend their lead. Edwards and Leffew helped increase the lead with points in the paint as the Bruins eventually pushed their lead to double-digits. The Scots made a push near the end of the quarter but as the buzzer sounded, the Bruins led 40-35.
With just one quarter to play, the game was up for grabs and both teams played for the win as they traded baskets in the early stages of the quarter. The Bruins continued to keep the lead thanks to great defensive play and key baskets late in the quarter.
After Delaney Edwards hit a pair of free throws, the Bruins led 51-43 with just over three minutes to play. The Scots came roaring back as a late run tied the game at 53-53 with thirty seconds to play. On the next possession, the Bruins worked the ball around hoping for the last shot. Madison Shupe buried a three with just one second to play as the Bruins edged the Scots 56-53.
"Our players were tuned in the entire game and it showed," Coach LeViere said after the team improved to 4-6 on the season. Edwards double-double led the way for the team but Jessiann Wiedmann also contributed 10 points in the win.
Next up, the Bruins will be back home on Saturday afternoon as they welome Trinity Baptist College to the Davis Field House.
