Lady Bruins Notch 3rd Straight Win

Kylee Leffew's 22 points lifted the Lady Bruins to 83-62 victory over the Trinity Baptist College Eagles on Friday night at the Davis Field House. With the win, the Bruins improve to 4-2 in region play and 9-13 overall.

"My teammates just found me and my shot was falling tonight," said Leffew. "Our defense helped us as we had good positioning. We made smart passes and were able to take advantage of open shots."

The Bruins used a dominant 49-29 rebounding advantage in the game tonight to help forge the victory, while holding the Eagles to four offensive rebounds in the game. "It was just an overall team effort of getting rebounds and boxing out," Bruins forward Delaney Edwards said. She finished with a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds in the game. Five players totaled five or more rebounds on the night for the Bruins.

Although the team struggled shooting in the first quarter, Leffew was at the bright spot, netting seven of the team's first twelve points. The team forged a 16-10 lead at the end of the first. The Bruins also benefited in the first from early foul trouble from the Eagles as two Eagles starters had to go to the bench within the first five minutes due to foul trouble.

The Eagles were able to cut the lead to 21-17 early in the second quarter, but a long two and a three from junior guard Rachel Clark quickly thwarted the Eagles run.  Down the stretch in the second, the Bruins used a press to help gain separation from the Eagles. Leffew remained hot, tallying 18 pints while shooting a remarkably efficient 7-11 from the field as the Bruins took a commanding 43-22 lead into halftime.

In the third quarter, the Bruins continued to build their lead, relying on great defense. The Eagles' guards struggled to get quality as the Bruins forced them to take contested jumpers on nearly every possession. As a result, the Bruins were able to push the ball into transition and find some easy looks on the break. Although the Eagles continued to battle, the Bruins were able to keep their distance in the second half, claiming the 83-62 region victory.

Along with her 22 points, Leffew added 5 rebounds and 2 steals. Madison Shupe added 11 points and eight rebounds in the win. Next up, the Bruins will host Johnson and Wales University on Thursday at the Davis Field House.
