The Lady Bruins used a big third quarter as the team outscored Trinity College 26-6 en route to a 78-49 victory on Monday night in the Davis Field House. With the win, the Lady Bruins improve to 11-14 on the season and 6-2 in region play.
"In the second half, we went back to playing better defense which fed our offense," Bruins Head Coach Mike LeViere said. "We really got the ball inside which helped us generate high percentage looks against their zone defense."
The Bruins came into the game on a hot streak, winning four of their last five games. From the opening tip, the Bruins looked to push the tempo to wear down the Tigers who entered the game with just five players in action.
The Tigers were able to keep pace with the Bruins in the first quarter behind the sharpshooting of center Mary Katherine Miller. But every time the Tigers made a run, the Bruins had an answer, forging a 23-12 lead at the end of the first.
The Bruins continued to build the lead opening the second quarter, pushing the lead to as many as fifteen. The Tigers continued to battle as their stingy defense forced the Bruins to miss seven shots in a row towards the end of the first half. As a result, the Tigers were able to close the gap to 35-30 at halftime.
In the second half, the Bruins were able to successfully move the ball around the Tigers 2-3 zone, creating open looks on nearly every possession. The Tigers began to show their fatigue as the Bruins began to pound the offensive glass for multiple second chance scoring opportunities. As a result, the Bruins were able to go on a large run as they pushed their lead.
Things went from bad to worse for the Tigers in the third. Miller tallied her fifth foul with 1:18 left in the quarter, forcing Trinity to play with only four players the rest of the game. The Bruins continued to push the tempo opening up a 61-36 lead, outscoring the Eagles 26-6 in the third.
With the game in hand, the Bruins rotated subs with each player scoring in the game. The Tigers were able to hit shots but the deficit was too much to overcome as the Bruins cruised to a 78-49 victory.
Kylee Leffew led the team with eighteen points and five rebounds. Delaney Edwards tallied eight points and twelve rebounds in the game while Sarah Thomsen and Madison Shupe tallied nine points a piece.
With the win the Bruins improved to 11-14 overall and 6-2 in region play. Next up, the Bruins will wrap up the regular season on Saturday as they welcome Johnson University of Florida to the Davis Field House. The tip-off is set for 12 p.m.
