Stevenson's Goal Lifts Bruins Past Golden Tigers 1-0

The Lady Bruins picked up another road win on Tuesday night as the team edged Brenau University 1-0 in Gainesville, Georgia. With the win, the Bruins move to 2-3 on the season having won back to back matches.

"We had a very strong work effort despite being a little off technically tonight," Bruins Head Coach Chris Carmichael said. "Our team did a great job of battling through the various obstacles we had to overcome tonight to get the win."

The Bruins came into the match on the heels of their first win of the season as the team defeated Southern Wesleyan University 3-2 in overtime on Saturday. The Golden Tigers came into the match against the Bruins at 0-2. The match would be delayed as lightning in the area suspended play for several minutes.

In the opening minutes, both teams tried to maintain possession while controlling the pace of play. Mikayla Rajcan and Megan Brubaker both had chances early on for the Bruins but each opportunity was thwarted by the Tigers.

The Bruins continued to possess as they looked to work the ball into the attacking third. Despite several chances throughout the remainder of the half, the first half ended as it began 0-0.

As the second half began, the Bruins continued gain opportunities as Rajcan had two shots in the first five minutes of the half. Still, the Bruins couldn't seem to find the back of the net.

In the 66th minute of play, the Bruins would get their best chance of the match as Jenna Bishop was fouled in the box awarding the Bruins a PK. Freshman Kayle Stevenson confidently took the kick and scored to give the Bruins a 1-0 lead.

The Golden Tigers came back looking to find the equalizer, but the Bruins defense stood strong and turned aside opportunities. With the match winding to a close, the Tigers tried to mount one last offensive but were unsuccessful as the Bruins held on for the 1-0 road win.

"Brenau played a very strong game and sustained pressure on us throughout," Coach Carmichael said. "We did a great job of creating our own shots on goal and I'm proud of the team and our players. Each of them contributed to our win tonight."

The game was evenly matched throughout with the Bruins outshooting the Golden Tigers 8-6 including a 5-1 on frame margin. Stevenson recorded her second goal of the season while keeper Angelina Martin recorded her first clean sheet of the season.

Next up, the Bruins will be on the road again on Thursday night as they travel to Atlanta, Georgia, for a matchup with Oglethorpe University.
