Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | by Jonny Gamet

Slow Start Cripples Lady Bruins in Loss to Greensboro College

The Bruins women's soccer team found themselves in a hole down 2-0 less than 20 minutes into the match. Unfortunately, the team never recovered as they fell to Greensboro College 5-1 on Monday evening at Alumni Stadium.

"Greensboro is a good program but we certainly didn't help ourselves today," Bruins Head Coach Chris Carmichael said. "We played about as bad as we could play in certain parts of the game. It was one of those games that we have to just move past and learn from."

The Bruins came into the match on the heels of a tough loss in their season opener on Saturday. Greensboro College entered Monday's match at 1-1 having defeated Bridgewater College 2-1 on Saturday.

From the opening kickoff, the Bruins and Pride exchanged possession with the hot September sun beating down on the field. It didn't take long for Greensboro to get on the board as Anna Rae Porcelli headed home a goal off a corner kick in the 5th minute to put the Pride up 1-0. Less than two minutes later, Greensboro increased their lead off a goal from Logan Schnabl.

The Bruins were back on their heels as they had dug themselves a hole to get out of. Still, the team was able to get a few chances on frame in the opening half but none of their shots turned into goals as they trailed 2-0 at the half.

In the second half, the Bruins came out looking to claw their way back into the game. Instead, another hot start by the Pride increased the lead as Porcelli netted her second goal of the match to put Greensboro up 3-0. Much like the first half, the Greensboro goals came in pairs and came quickly as Angela Niles buried a shot to increase the lead to 4-0.

The Bruins were desperate for an answer and they found one on the feet of Brinkley Adams as the freshman netted her first goal of the season as the Bruins trailed 4-1. With the second half winding down, the Bruins tried to close the gap but the Pride put an exclamation point on their win as Isabella Cross netted a goal in the closing minutes as Greensboro finished the match winning 5-1.

"We can play and we can keep up with these teams, but ultimately we have to show more of a passion to want to win," Coach Carmichael said. "Right now we are just here and present but we're not really playing like we want to win. We have to step that up. We've been here before and tomorrow we have to do the best we can."

Next up, the Bruins will be back on the pitch for the final match of their three-game homestand tomorrow afternoon as they welcome Truett-McConnell University. Kickoff time is set for 4 p.m.
