Strong Defensive Effort Powers Bruins in Win over Royals

The Bob Jones University Bruins women's basketball team turned in a strong defensive effort on Friday night as the team defeated Johnson University (TN) 68-53. The win marks the fourth in the last five games for the Bruins as the team improves to 9-9 overall.

The Friday night game began slowly. It wasn't until the clock read 7:27 that the first points of the game were scored by Delaney Edwards. The team utilized Edwards down low most of the first quarter with the junior scoring the team's first six points. As a result, the Bruins kept the upper hand but the Royals used several runs to keep the score close. At the end of the first quarter the Bruins led 16-7.

Throughout the game, the Bruins dominated both the paint and the perimeter. The team was able to put together bursts of offense thanks to key steals by Rachel Clark and Kylee Leffew. Still, the Royals refused to back down as they clawed their way back to trail BJU 35-25 at the break.

In the third quarter, the Bruins went on a run thanks to three straight steal-and-score layups by Leffew. The Royals answered right back as Keelie Lusby helped Johnson cut the lead to single digits. But as the third quarter came to a close the Bruins led 53-42.

With one quarter to play, it was still anyone's ball game. The defensive effort again proved to be a key difference in the game as the Bruins forced the Royals into tough looks and grabbed defensive rebounds.

Despite struggling down the stretch, the Bruins were able to win the game 68-53. The Bruins made up for missed shots in rebounds, totaling 32 rebounds for the night, 22 of which were defensive. The Bruins tallied 11 steals as a team which turned into multiple points on the fastbreak.

Leffew and Edwards led the team in points scored, both with 17 points. Edwards also led in rebounds with six for the night. The team as a whole shot 75% from the free throw line and forced 17 turnovers.

The Bruins went into the game ready to play a strong defense and shut down the Royals' shots. "They weren't able to find the open shot as easily as the first time we played them," Kylee Leffew said in the post-game interview.

Next up, the Lady Bruins play in an exhibition game against Furman University on Monday. The game will be played at Furman at 7 p.m.
