The Bruins basketball team opens the 2021-22 regular season on Friday night as the team travels to Piedmont University in Demorest, Georgia. This will be the season-opener for BJU after the team finished last season at 4-9 in an abbreviated COVID season. The Bruins fell short in the NCCAA DII Region Tournament ending their chances to advance to nationals.
On Friday, the Bruins will face the Lions who ended their season at 11-7 before coming up short in the USA South Conference Championship 81-54. The Bruins and Lions met twice last season with the Bruins falling in both games 88-64 and 93-76.
"Piedmont is a strong team and they are picked to finish at the top of their conference," Bruins Head Coach Burton Uwarow said. "They are a really good senior-led team and we're looking forward to going to their place on Friday night."
In the first matchup, the Bruins struggled from deep shooting just 13% from three-point range as the Lions coasted to the win. Just two weeks later, the Bruins allowed the Lions to pull away late but the Bruins had five players score in double figures in the loss. This will be the fifth matchup between the two programs with the Bruins posting an 0-4 record against Piedmont.
"I feel like all of the trials from last season will help us this year," Coach Uwarow said. "We expect each one of our players to make an impact this season and we want to play at a pace where we can get most people in throughout each game."
The Bruins will open the season on Friday night with tip-off scheduled for 7 p.m.
