Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Kaitlyn Unruh

Bruins Shutdown Suns to Advance to NCCAA DII South Region Championship Game

In Thursday's semifinal match of the NCCAA DII South Region tournament, the men's soccer team defeated the Johnson University (FL) Suns 10-0 to advance to Saturday's region championship match. Nine of tonight's ten goals were scored by different players including a goal by goalkeeper Chris Monczewski.

"These games are important even if we feel like we have control of them," said Coach Greg Fulton. "I thought we did a really good job getting our form and scoring goals. This is just step one in the process of unfinished business."

The NCCAA DII South Region tournament kicked off on Wednesday at Alumni Stadium. The Bruins were named the #1 seed giving them a first round bye. #5 Johnson University (FL) took on #4 Toccoa Falls College in the first round and came away with the 2-1 win.

As the Bruins and Suns took the field, it was all Bruins right from the start. Peter Waddy was quick on the draw as he would score off of a free kick a minute and a half into the game to give the Bruins a 1-0 lead. As the first half continued, the Bruins would see plenty of scoring opportunities but it wasn't until the 33rd minute that Peter Waddy would cross the ball towards the net where Ian Arendse made a beautiful touch to send the ball into the back of the goal to give the Bruins the 2-0 lead. Mario Figueroa would get on tonight's score sheet with 90 seconds remaining in the first half.

Jordan Crews would kick off the second half scoring spree with a beautiful volley from outside of the box. A free kick by Caleb Adams would set Charley Gualajara up for a gorgeous bicycle kick goal 55 minutes in. A minute later Victor Oladipo would score from the spot after the Bruins earned a penalty kick.

Mario Figueroa would dance with the ball in front of the net before scoring his second goal of the night. Figueroa would be the only Bruin to score more than one goal in tonight's contest.

With under 30 minutes remaining in the contest, Eli Solomon would be taken down in the box to draw a penalty kick, but it would be goalkeeper Chris Monczewski would take and bury the penalty kick.

Jean Carerro and Conley Burk would score the final two goals for the Bruins bringing the final tally to 10 goals for the men's soccer team.

The Bruins will face Trinity Baptist College on Saturday as they fight for their second consecutive NCCAA DII South Region Championship title at Alumni Stadium. The Bruins have played the Eagles twice already this season coming away with a 4-0 victory the first time and a 7-0 victory during their second meeting.

"It's easy to overlook teams when you feel like you've had a lot of success against them already," said Fulton. "I think it makes it a more dangerous match. But going into Saturday, we still have a job to do for 90 minutes until it's done and then we celebrate."
