The Bruins started the season off on a high note with an overtime win against Southern Wesleyan University 2-1 Thursday night. This was the first time in program history that the Bruins have defeated the Warriors.
"What a game," said coach Greg Fulton. "Tonight was all about moving forward as one and building momentum. I am insanely proud of the heart my boys showed across the board. We are very early in the season and to win close games (especially battling from behind) is a big deal."
It was a physical first half with a lot of back and forth action between the two sides. Both teams had several quality looks with shots even on both sides. But Southern Wesleyan got on the board first with a goal from Warrior midfielder Zachary Hurst with less than four minutes remaining in the first half.
The Bruins came out firing in the second half and were rewarded just 15 minutes in as Gasheed Lareche's shot went top right corner to score the first goal of the season for the Bruins and to tie the game up at 1-1.
Defense was on lock for the Bruins as Southern Wesleyan countered with several good scoring chances near the end of the second half. 90 minutes of regulation play came to the end with the Bruins and Warriors tied at one goal a piece.
Overtime started with the same intensity as regulation, but with less than five minutes remaining in overtime the Bruins were fouled which resulted in a free kick. Bruins midfielder Eli Solomon scored off of the free kick to give the Bruins a 2-1 victory.
"We must now refocus after an emotional win to continue to improve for our next game," said Fulton.
The Bruins are back home on Saturday, September 4 for their home opener as the team will welcome Truett-McConnell University to Alumni Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
