The Bruins continued their winning ways as the women's soccer team defeated the Southern Wesleyan Warriors 4-1 at Alumni Stadium Thursday evening. Tonight's win marks the 10
th straight victory and the best run in program history for the Bruins.
"Coming into the game, we knew we had a lot to prove," said Bruins defender Korbyn Griffith. "The girls played so hard and despite the game not always going our way, we fought to show what we are made of. I'm so proud of this team and all we have accomplished."
The Warriors came out battling hard and recorded 14 shots in the first half before Mia Marks got the ball and opened the scoring with less than minutes remaining in the first 45. The tally for Marks was her 11
th of the season.
"I am incredibly proud of how this team grinded through a difficult part of the game when we didn't have a rhythm of play and still found a way to score a goal," said Head Coach Chris Carmichael. "SWU did a great job breaking us down and forcing lots of turnovers. But Korbyn Griffith and the defensive line did an amazing job absorbing SWU's sustained pressure and were able to start several counter attacks."
The Bruins started the second half strong and in the 60th minute a pass by Mia Marks perfectly set up Kayle Stevenson for a beautiful finish to double the lead for the Bruins.
Â
In the 74th minute, a long ball by Anna Grace Abrams sent Brinkley Adams running up the field where she would slide the ball through the legs of the goalkeeper but a Southern Wesleyan defender was there stop the first shot from going into the back of the net but Adams was there to finish it and give the Bruins the 3-0 lead.
The ball slipped off the fingertips of Bruins goalkeeper Rebekah Shoop and the Warriors would get on the board in the 84th minute.
Â
Marks would get her 2
nd goal of the game and seal the deal for the Bruins as Gabriela Gonzalez would send a perfect pass on the far side of the field for Marks to get the ball and finish.
"Mia Marks and Brinkley Adams were constant threats on the wings and hit some big goals," said Carmichael. "Gabriela Gonzalez, Anna Grace Abrams and Kayle Stevenson did a great job breaking down their defensive line to play in our wingers. Kayle got a really nice goal at a time where we really needed it and was a big lift in the midfield. Great effort all the way around and will use the weekend to get some recovery."
The Bruins travel to Due West, South Carolina next Tuesday to take on Erskine College.
