Bruins Come Away with Gutsy Win Over Warriors

The Bruins continued to battle for 90 minutes despite being down a goal to come back and beat the Southern Wesleyan University Warriors 4-3 from Central, South Carolina.

"The team showed a ton of resilience throughout this gutsy match to keep coming back from being down a goal to come back and finally win it," said Head Coach Chris Carmichael.  "An unbelievable match, and I couldn't be more proud of their work effort and how they stuck together and covered each despite being under a lot of pressure all game. We are still a work in progress but with each passing match we are putting together a new component that we need to excel at so hats off to each player for showing determination and resolve to win."

The Bob Jones University women's soccer team came into the road match on a two-game winning run after picking up an 11-1 victory over Regent University on Saturday followed by a 4-0 win against Toccoa Falls College on Monday. Southern Wesleyan entered tonight's contest holding a 3-8-1 season record after picking up a 4-0 conference victory over Erskine College over the weekend.

From the start of tonight's game, Gabriela Gonzalez would get the first good look on goal just over two minutes in, but a save by the Warriors would keep her off the score sheet. An attack from the Warriors five minutes later saw them get on the board to take the early 1-0 lead.

In the 19th minute off of an assist from Gabriela Gonzalez, Kayle Stevenson sent the ball right into the center of the goal to level the score.

With 15 minutes remaining in the first half, the Bruins would see themselves down by a goal again. But the deficit didn't last long as Rylee Johnson responded less than a minutes later to even the score once more. At halftime the score was deadlocked 2-2.

Six seconds into the second half, the Warriors would pick up their third goal of the game to regain the lead. Despite being down, the Bruins continued working together and in the 49th minute Mia Marks sent the ball high and to the right to score for the visiting team. In the 56th minute, the Bruins were fouled in the box and earned a penalty kick. Mia Marks took the PK and as she tucked it away from the spot, the Bruins took their first lead of the night.

The Bruins held on to their one goal advantage throughout the rest of the match to come away with the 4-3 win against a tough opponent. With today's victory, the Bruins have improved to 9-4-1 on the season.

"It was a high pressure and physical game but we kept our composure and fought until the end," said midfielder Reagan Tierney. "We were able to get the ball in the back of the net for the win. I couldn't be prouder of our team effort!"

Up next, the Bruins will be back home for a 2 p.m. kickoff from Alumni Stadium as the host Erskine College.
