Women's Basketball Comes Up Big in Home Opener

The Bob Jones University women's basketball team made a statement in their home opener with a 77-34 win over Regent University Saturday afternoon from the Davis Field House in Greenville, South Carolina. With today's win the Bruins improve to 2-3 on the season.

"It was a great team effort today," said Head Coach Mike LeViere. "It was great to see the well-rounded scoring and the assists. I was most pleased with our defense and rebounding. We were more locked in to doing the little things and staying focused on where we wanted the ball on defense, who the other team's personnel was on the floor, etc. it was a much better outing for us from the defensive side of things."

The Bruins entered today's contest after picking up their first win of the season on Tuesday in a 72-69 decision over Pfeiffer University. Regent University fell 109-28 to Tuscalum University on Friday evening. Today marked the first meeting between the two teams.

After an early layup from the Royals, the Bruins went on a 12 point run to see a strong start to today's game. Anna Layne Wylder dropped back-to-back three-pointers to continue the scoring for the home team. At the end of the first 10 minutes of play, it was the Bruins leading the Royals 22-7.

A 13 point run at the beginning of the second quarter gave the Bruins the 25 point advantage with just under five minutes remaining before the half. Shea Dickinson contributed to seven of those points as the Bruins went into halftime with a 27 point lead.

The Bruins and Royals exchanged buckets early on in the third quarter, but the two early layups from the Royals would be the only points they would see that quarter as the Bruins defense held them to 13-4.

The final quarter of today's game proved to be the highest scoring as well with both teams looking to finish the game strong. But it was the Bruins who came out on top to win their second game of the season 77-34.

Four players scored in the double digits today with Anna Layne Wylder leading with 15. Shea Dickinson was right behind her with 14 points and 11 rebounds. The Bruins were 84.5% from the free throw line while shooting 47% from the field.

"We are seeing improvements every game and we just need to continue that," said LeViere. "We are still inexperienced in our roles and this was a good step forward."

Up next, the Bruins are back at home following a Thanksgiving break on Monday, November 28 in the Davis Field House.
