The Bob Jones University Bruins women's basketball team saw their five game winning streak snapped after a 79-53 loss to Brevard College at the Davis Field House Tuesday night. It was Shea Dickinson who led the team with 12 points as the Bruins now sit at 5-4 on the season.
"We weren't prepared for the man to man defense Brevard played tonight. They have some quick guards that gave us trouble and we just couldn't recover," said Head Coach Mike LeViere.
The Bruins entered today's contest after a thrilling 62-61 victory over Covenant College on Saturday. They returned home to Greenville, South Carolina where they welcomed Brevard College to the Davis Field House in their second game against the Tornados this season.
Anna Layne Wylder opened the scoring for the Bruins with a three-pointer, but Brevard then took the lead as they scored six straight points. Halfway through the first quarter, Shea Dickinson drained her shot from the outside the three-point line to even the game at eight points apiece. It was Shea Dickinson again who went deep to sink a three-pointer and bring the Bruins within two to close out the first quarter.
The Bruins tied the game up 17-17 early in the second quarter. But as the game progressed, turnovers began to plague the Bruins and as the teams went into halftime, Brevard saw a 22 point lead.
After the break, a three-pointer from Ainsley Hutton looked promising, but the Tornados were able to extend their lead with a 14-point run. With just under four minutes remaining in the third quarter, the Bruins were able to score seven straight to try and dig their way out. But at the end of 30 minutes of play, Brevard still held on to the 65-38 advantage.
The team continued to battle in the fourth quarter and saw improvement as the team went 7-8 from the free throw line, but the deficit was too large and the Bruins fell 79-53 to Brevard College.
"Like some of our other recent games, we've exhibited a lot of resiliency," said LeViere. "We started the game 0-8 on free throws, and that is not who we are. It would be easy to step to the line and think it doesn't matter after that. But in the second half, they made enough to hit 60% for the game. That mental toughness and resiliency is great to see, but we need to have that from the very beginning, and that is on me to make sure we are prepared and ready right from the gate."
Up next, the Bruins will go on the road to face Johnson and Wales University on Thursday in Charlotte, North Carolina.
