Tournament Information
The Bruins basketball team enters the NCCAA DII South Regional Tournament this weekend in Jacksonville, Florida. Despite having the best region record among the teams participating, the Bruins were seeded #3 overall due to the NCCAA power rating. The power rating is calculated based on a variety of parameters including who you play, the score, and other determiners.
The following is the seeding for this year's tournament which will take place at Trinity Baptist College in Jacksonville, Florida:
- #1 - Toccoa Falls College
- #2 - Trinity Baptist College
- #3 - Bob Jones University
- #4 - Johnson University (FL)
- #5 - Pensacola Christian College
- #6 - Southeastern Baptist College
"Our message to the guys this week has been to control what we can control," Bruins Head Men's Basketball Coach Burton Uwarow said. "Every team we face is going to be strong. We have to be excellent in our transition defense, shot selection and our rebounding. It's time to play the way we know we are capable of."
The Bruins finished the year at 11-11 and 7-2 in region play. The team will open the regional tournament in the quarterfinal round on Thursday night as the Bruins will battle #6 Southeastern Baptist University for the third time this season.
In the previous two matchups, the Bruins defeated the Chargers 89-69 and 83-71. Thursday's quarterfinal will be a rematch of last year's regional playoff when Southeastern upset BJU to end the 2020-21 season.
The winner of Thursday's semifinal will advance to face #2 Trinity Baptist College on Friday night. The Bruins split the season series at 1-1 with TBC including winning the season finale on Saturday in a 79-71 win at the Davis Field House. In their history, the Bruins are just 2-2 when playing in Jacksonville.
On the other side of the bracket, #1 seeded Toccoa Falls College will face the winner of the 4/5 game featuring Johnson University (FL) and Pensacola Christian College. This season, Toccoa Falls has had four South region losses including Johnson University (FL) on November 12.
The South Region Championship will be played on Saturday at 4 p.m. The Bruins will be looking to capture their first region championship since the 2017-18 season and third in program history as the team hopes to once again advance to the DII National Tournament. While the Bruins were bounced in last year's tournament, the team has advanced to the region championship in two of the last three seasons.
Thursday's quarterfinal is set to tip-off at 5:30 p.m.
