The Bob Jones University women's soccer team made the trip Harrisonburg, Virginia to face Eastern Mennonite University where they battled for 90 minutes to a 0-0 draw. Following today's contest, the Bruins are now 6-3-1 on the season.
"It was not the result we wanted, but the way things were going it could have easily gone the other way. This was one of those games you walk away feeling grateful for the tie as the Royals were creating some good scoring opportunities as well and it could have gone their way," said Head Coach Chris Carmichael. "With each passing game we are being confronted with new challenges that we have to figure out how to deal with. I thought we made some good adjustments for the second half and I am proud of the team for stepping up their game and creating some great scoring opportunities. On another day those go in. Eastern Mennonite University played a great game, and we will need to look at the video and learn."
The Bruins came into the midweek match on the heels of a 1-0 victory over Oglethorpe University 24 hours before. As the Bruins prepared to face off against Eastern Mennonite University for the first time in program history, the EMU Royals were looking to secure their first win of the season coming off of a seven game losing streak.
As the game kicked off, Bob Jones looked for the go ahead goal, but their efforts were stifled by the Royals. After 45 minutes of play, the match remained scoreless.
Bob Jones came out firing in the 2nd half looking to be the first on the score sheet. They saw several opportunities to get past the Royals defense and put the ball into the back of the net but those chances would be scooped up by the Royal's keeper. With around 20 minutes left, the Royals began adding more pressure in the Bruins defensive zone but Bob Jones responded well and kept them off the board.
"We made some adjustments at halftime to deal with the heavy man marking they were doing," said Carmichael. "It appeared to be working as we were getting some great looks on goal and missed a couple of point blank goal scoring opportunities that should have sealed the win."
Carmichael continued by saying, "I knew they were a good team from scouting them and their record didn't reflect their quality as they are hard working, solid, and technically strong. Our defensive line of Braden Adams, Korbyn Griffith, Jessica Townsend and Abby Arrowood played amazing and kept us in the game."
Wednesday's game ended in a 0-0 tie with the Bruins finishing with 14 shots and the Royals coming away with six.
The Bruins are back home next week as they welcome North Greenville University to Alumni Stadium on Monday.
