The Bob Jones University women's soccer team has extended their winning ways to three games following today's 5-1 victory over Pfeiffer University at Alumni Stadium in Greenville, South Carolina.
"The team did a great job staying to the game plan and adjusting to some things that Pfeiffer did," said Head Coach Chris Carmichael. "We couldn't have asked for a better outcome."
The Bruins entered today's game 2-0 on the season after taking home wins against North Carolina Wesleyan University on Friday and Meredith College on Saturday. Through both games they came away with nine goals while only allowing two in the back of their own net.
From the whistle, the Bruins held possession early and it paid off in the 5th minute as Anna Grace Abrams fired the ball from outside the box to give the Bruins an early lead.
With just over 10 minutes remaining before halftime, Gabriela Gonzalez collected the ball to go on the breakaway and double the Bruins lead.
Just a few minutes later, Francesca Peters crossed the ball to the far side to Ashlyn Schmidt who scored and made the game 3-0 in favor of the Bruins.
After halftime, Mari Altamirano of Pfeiffer University crossed the ball across the goal to Emma LaFave who shot it right past the goalkeeper to get on the board. This gave the Falcons momentum going forward
"We let them get back into the game which we didn't want to have happen," said Carmichael. "So we did what we knew we needed to do which was step hard on the defensive side, make the field bigger, and get the ball moving quicker on the attacking side and let that open up some shots which it did."
In the 67th minute, Abby Arrowood settled the ball outside the box and crossed it to Gabriela Gonzalez who turned and gave herself some space before sailing it into the back of the net for her second goal of the day.
But the Bruins weren't done yet. With 17 minutes left on the clock, it was a foot race to get to the ball as freshman Kaylee Rochon just beat the Falcon's defender and keeper to chip it into the goal.
The game ended with a decisive 5-1 Bruins victory.
"Right now we need to get some recovery, and then we'll get back to what we do best," Carmichael said.
Up next, the Bruins travel to Greensboro, North Carolina to face Greensboro College on Friday and Guilford College on Saturday.
