The Bob Jones University women's basketball team picked up their third straight victory in a 58-43 decision over Regent University Friday evening in Virginia Beach, Virginia. With today's win, the Bruins have improved to 8-7 on the season.
"After a long day of travel, it is hard to step off the bus and play our best," said Head Coach Mike LeViere. "It was a good opportunity to put into practice the philosophy of controlling the things we can and not worrying about the things we can't. We may not be super sharp on offense but we can always work really hard on defense and rebound. I was pleased with our effort, especially in the first half. I thought our defense was excellent even though our shooting was off."
The Bruins entered today's game following back to back wins over Johnson University (FL) and Great Lakes Christian College on January 5 and 6. Regent University came into the contest still hunting for their first win of the season. The two programs met for the first time back in November where the Bruins pulled out a 77-34 result.
From tip-off the Bruins established their lead and got off to a 7-0 advantage. Through the first 10 minutes of play, the Bruins held on to their 14-6 lead. A jumper from Ashley Phelan gave the Bruins a 10 point lead at the start of the second quarter. The final three minutes before halftime, the Bruins went on a 7-2 run and at halftime, the Bruins defense held the Royals to just 12 points while scoring 27 of their own.
Catherine Skebo opened up the third quarter with a three pointer. As the quarter progressed, the Royals began chip away at the Bruins lead and at the conclusion of the third quarter it was Regent who outscored Bob Jones 18-14. Katrina Tabora drained a three pointer to get the final quarter rolling. With three minutes remaining in the game, the Bruins advanced to a 20 point lead, after going on a seven point spree. At the final whistle, the Bruins finished with the 58-43 win.
Catherine Skebo and Bethany Daulton had good games as they led with 10 points each. It was another solid performance from Shea Dickinson as she saw 10 rebounds and nine points on the night.
"It was a good team effort," said LeViere. "And we can continue to build momentum off of this."
Up next, the Bruins come back home to host Paine College on Tuesday, January 24 at 5:30 p.m. at the Davis Field House.
