Bruins Close Out Homecoming Weekend with 5-1 Victory

The Bob Jones University men's soccer team closed out Homecoming weekend with a 5-1 victory over Emory & Henry College Saturday night in front of a big crowd at Alumni Stadium. With tonight's win, the Bruins have improved to 7-3-1 on the season.

"Homecoming is always a great event. We loved having a big crowd and a good atmosphere," said Head Coach Greg Fulton. "As far as the game goes, our team played really well, and we created a lot of chances."

Ten minutes into tonight's contest, a give and go between Mario Figueroa and Charly Gualajara gave the Bruins momentum early as Figueroa tallied the first goal of the game.

It proved to be a pretty physical contest between the two teams and in the 39th minute Anthony Ruiz was taken down in the box to earn a penalty kick. Ian Arendse stepped up to the spot to take the penalty kick. He went bottom left to slot it past the Wasps' goalkeeper and double the lead for the Bruins.

With 30 seconds left before halftime, some confusion in front of the Bruins goal allowed Yossi Burch to run up and get a shot past Cameron Braswell to see the scoreboard read 2-1 going into the halftime break.

After halftime and in the 61st minute, Mario Figueroa intercepted a pass intended for Emory & Henry and had a one on one opportunity before he was taken down from behind in the box to see the Bruins get their second PK of the contest. This time, it was Charly Gualajara who would step up to the spot. His shot went left as the Wasps keeper went right for the third goal of the night for Bob Jones.

Seven minutes later, Gualajara collected the ball from a throw in and his left-footed shot from the top of the box slid past the goalie to notch his second goal of the game.

The Bruins secured their victory in the final minutes as Bryce Ramler chipped it in for the fifth goal of the night for Bob Jones.

"Tonight was a tale of two halves," said Fulton. "In the second half, we put away our chances and ultimately it became more one sided for us and we were able to rotate through players who don't normally get to be on the field. It was a great game going into a tough week ahead."

The night ended with a bang as the Bruins ran away with the 5-1 win and a post-game fireworks finale to wrap up Homecoming weekend.

Up next, the Bruins will host NCAA DII opponent Converse University before making the trip to Florida to face Pensacola Christian College on Saturday.
