The Bob Jones University women's basketball team played hard and battled an athletic Paine College but fell 70-62 to the Lions in Augusta, Georgia. With today's result, the Bruins now sit at 9-13Â on the season.
"At the end of a very tough stretch of the season, this game could have been a very easy one for the team to just forget about, but I am glad we came out ready to play," said Head Coach Mike LeViere. "Paine is very athletic, and I thought we handled their pressure well overall. We drew a lot of fouls. We just didn't convert at the free throw line. Between the combination of being out rebounded and then shooting 55% from the line on 33 attempts, we can't expect to win too many games that way."
LeViere continued by saying, "we had a lot of good things happen: everybody played and everyone contributed. That shows how deep we can be. We just need to convert the free throws and rebound."
The Lions opened tonight's game with back to back jumpers to take an early lead. The next five shots made by the Bruins were from outside the arc as BJU went up 15-11 after the first 10 minutes of play.Â
In the first minute of the second quarter, the Lions went on to even the score until a jumper from Katrina Tabora put the Bruins back on top. With 50 seconds remaining in the second quarter, a jumper from Hallie Ritter gave Bob Jones a seven point advantage. At halftime the Bruins were leading 29-24.Â
Shea Dickinson went two for two from the three point line to open the scoring for the Bruins in the third quarter. The Bruins continued to battle putting up 19 points in the third quarter.Â
The Bruins entered the final 10 minutes with a nine point lead. With just over six minutes remaining on the scoreboard, the Lions came back to tie the game. The Bruins took back their lead until a three pointer from Paine College saw them regain the lead with just under three minutes left. At the final buzzer, it was the Lions on top 70-62.Â
"Every game it seems we are learning and improving but at the same time we are finding ways to come out behind on the scoreboard," said LeViere. "When we play a complete game, it is going to be pretty!"
Up next, the Bruins will travel to Jacksonville, Florida to face South region opponent Trinity Baptist College on Saturday afternoon. Tip-off for Saturday's game is scheduled for 2 p.m.
