The Bruins played a complete game from start to finish taking the early lead and never looking back. Catherine Skebo, Annie Miller, Anna Layne Wylder, Bria Dickinson, and Shea Dickinson all took the court for the Bruins tip-off against the Warren Wilson Owls tonight. After 40 minutes, the Bruins had finished the Owls 73-60.
From the tip, the Owls got the first possession, but missed their chance to score first giving the Bruins the opportunity to capitalize. Annya Layne got the scoring started with a mid-range jumper for the first points of the game. Skebo, B. Dickinson, and Wylder all contributed to the lead the Bruins had with three-pointers to take a 11-5 lead. The Bruins struggled through some early foul trouble, but they were able to keep their 22-14 lead to end the first quarter.
To start the second quarter, the Bruins had back-to-back possessions leading to three-point shots to take a 28-16 lead. Through the first four minutes of the quarter, the Bruins' lead kept shrinking as the Owls were making a comeback. To hold the Owls off, the Bruin's starters went back in to retake control of the game and brought the score up to 39-32. With just over two minutes to play, the shot clock was just about to expire, but Anna Layne Wylder drained a three-point shot to give the Bruins a halftime score of 42-32.
The Bruins opened the second half with a layup off the hands of Shea Dickinson as she found a nice opening behind the Owls defense. Much of the third quarter was evenly matched, but the Bruins held steady throughout the quarter. The Owls made an attempt to get back into it half way through the quarter pulling the score to 49-43, but the Bruins closed the door with free throws from Katrina Tabora and a three ball from Beth Clark. With only 10 minutes to play, the Bruins held a 61-50 lead.
A slow start to the fourth quarter led to four minutes of empty baskets from either side. Finally, at 6:30 to play, Shea Dickinson broke the drought with her own three-point shot. The remainder of the game went back and forth, score for score, but the Bruins held their lead and finished with the win 73-60.
"Tonight was an improvement over our performance Saturday and that is what we are continually pursuing; improvement," started Head Coach Mike LeViere. "This was a tough matchup for us as they have some very quick athletic players that make us work to stay in front of them. Thankfully, this is a great shooting team and as the other aspects of the game continue to improve, we are going to get better and better."
Up next, the Bruins aren't done at home yet! Friday night, the Bruins host Clinton College and are scheduled to tip-off at 6:00 p.m.
