Despite a strong defensive effort, the Bruins fell short on offense as they lost in a 68-55 contest at Lookout Mountain, Georgia to Covenant College Friday evening.
The Bruins entered today's game at Covenant College after falling in a close contest at Sewanee on Thursday. Friday's game marked the sixth meeting between the Bruins and the Scots with Covenant College leading the series 3-2.
Jenna Brooks opened the scoring following two made free throws by Anna Layne Wylder to put the Bruins ahead 4-0 to start the contest. The Scots came back to knot the game halfway through the first quarter before going on a 7-0 run to take their first lead of the game. Caitlyn Dickerson closed out the first 10 minutes of play with two free throws to see the score favor Covenant 12-7.
As the second quarter got underway, the Bruins began to battle back. A shot from outside the arc by Kayley Trump with 5:13 on the clock got the Bruins within three points. With just over two minutes Faith McClary started a 6-0 run that put the Bruins ahead with the slight lead. It remained close and at halftime the Scots led the Bruins 27-25.
After the halftime break, Trump opened the scoring with back-to-back three-pointers to see Bob Jones regain the lead. A deep three by Jenna Brooks pulled them to a nine-point advantage halfway through the third quarter. Bob Jones led 45-36 with 1:55 left before Covenant College went on a 7-0 scoring spree to close out the third quarter.
The final 10 minutes of play began with a back and forth effort as the score remained close. But as the quarter continued, the Scots gained momentum and finished the game on a 7-0 run to take the win 68-55.
Kayley Trump led all players with 21 points, her college best.
"If you look at some of the stats, we shouldn't have been in the game," said Head Coach Mike LeViere. "They took 75 shots, and we took 48. But our defense was extremely good, and we took away a lot of what they wanted to do. Holding them to 15% three point shooting was testament to our hard work on defense."
Coach LeViere continued saying, "I believe fatigue was a factor as we were shorthanded again with losing Keely Price to an ankle injury last night. Foul trouble became a factor as well. But we are encouraged with our progress and continue to get better all the time."
It's another quick turnaround for the Bruins as they are back on their home court for a 1 p.m. game on Saturday as they welcome Welch College to the Davis Field House.
