Bruins Fall to Scots to Close Weekend Trip

The offensive power from the Maryville College Scots was too much to handle for the Bruins today as they fall 4-1 in Lookoutn Mountain, Georgia. They now hold a 2-2 record before coming back home.

"I was encouraged that we could play even with an extremely good Maryville team for a good part of the first half and the end of the second half," Head Coach Chris Carmichael said. "In many part of the game, we were able to dominate possession and create a number of excellent goal scoring opportunities that we would finish on another day."

This was the first meeting against the Scots of Maryville in program history. Going into the match, Coach Carmichael knew that they would be a tough opponent.

In the first half, the Bruins defense were able to control the Scots a little bit only allowing one goal in the 18th minute that made the game 1-0. "Our defense did a great job in the first half building the attack out of the back and under pressure but we struggled with dominating the attacking half of the pitch and need to get more composure there," Coach Carmichael said. Though the Bruins had chances, they could not capitalize and score so that score held until halftime.

In the second half, the Scots scored three more goals in a span of just ten minutes with them coming in the 66th minute, 68th minute, and 74th minute. When it looked like the Bruins were going to get shut out, Celeste Baladi scored for the Bruins with just seconds left in the game to make the final score 4-1.

Even with the loss, Coach Carmichael found a big positive. "We had a lot of freshman get some quality minutes," he said, "and they finished the last 15 minutes of the game by playing some good soccer and were able to possess in the attacking half which eventually lead to our lone goal by Celeste Baladi."

Coach Carmichael wants to keep the record clear that this team is mentally tough and good at handling adversity. Shelbie Wix, the graduate assistant coach echoed some things about the mentality of this team. She said "The beginning of the season is usually rocky, but we learn, grow, and put in the hard work to become that team unit to create more goal scoring opportunities."

"I am always so proud of the girls no matter the outcome," Wix goes on to say. "We play for the glory of God, not ourselves, and they truly exemplify that on and off the field."

The Bruins are coming home to play at Alumni Stadium Tuesday, September 10 against St. Andrews University for their home opener. Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m.
