Bruins Charge Past Southeastern Baptist with 60-35 Win

The Bob Jones University women's basketball team is back in the win column after they picked up a big 60-35 victory over NCCAA South Region opponent Southeastern Baptist College Friday night in the Davis Field House.

The Bruins came into today's game looking to break out of a four-game losing slide. Bob Jones met the Chargers earlier this season in Gallatin, Tennessee where the Bruins picked up the 54-44 victory to lead the all-time series against Southeastern 2-0.

It was a slow start to tonight's contest as the two teams completed the first 10 minutes of play with 10 total baskets. Heading into the second quarter, the Bruins held a slight 6-4 lead over the Chargers. After an early free throw by Southeastern to start the second quarter, Anna Layne Wylder got the Bruins on the board with a three-pointer. The two teams kept the score close each scoring 12 points in the second. At halftime the Bruins went into the locker room with the slight edge over the Chargers, leading 18-16.

The Bruins offense exploded in the third quarter. For the final eight minutes of the quarter, the Bruins defense kept Southeastern off the scoreboard while they racked up 18 straight points to secure a 21 point advantage.

BJU continued to increase their lead in the final 10 minute of the game and were able to solidify their win with a final score of 60-35.

Three Bruins finished in double figures with Jenna Brooks leading the way with 19 points and eight rebounds followed by Anna Layne Wylder with 15 and Keely Price with 10 points.

Following the game, Head Coach Mike LeViere said, "it was a slow start especially offensively tonight. It took a long time for us to get into a rhythm, and we also didn't rebound well. Thankfully we played good defense and kept Southeastern from scoring much while we struggled."

Coach LeViere continued saying, "the second half saw us win the rebound battle and get into a flow offensively. We ended up shooting the ball well but that was a result of good ball movement and players making good decisions. Jenna had a great game with rebounds and shooting. Her pursuit of the ball has improved dramatically, and we will continue to do well when we all value the ball more. We had a 75% assist ratio on our made baskets. That means we were moving the ball unselfishly and finding the open person. That's fun to be a part of, and we saw the results there in the second half. Now time to get some rest and come back strong tomorrow and continue the upward progression."

It will be a quick turnaround as the Bruins are back on the court to close out their five-game home stand with a Saturday afternoon contest against Warren Wilson College. Tip-off for Saturday's game against the Owls is set for 2 p.m.
