Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Kaitlyn Yerkes

Bruins Drop Home Opener to Covenant College

An early deficit proved too much to overcome as the Bob Jones University women's basketball team fell 71-64 to the Covenant College Scots on Tuesday night inside the Davis Field House.

Covenant came out firing, opening the game on a 14-0 run before the Bruins were able to get on the scoreboard with four made free throws by Faith Hayward. A shot from outside the arc by freshman Peyton Teague added three more points to the Bruins to end the first 10 minutes behind 26-7.

The Bruins continued to struggle in the second frame shooting only 33% from the field. At halftime, the Bruins trailed Covenant College 39-16.

After the break, the Bruins began to settle in. Jenna Brooks with the and one started the scoring in the third quarter. Another and one opportunity for the Bruins by Faith Hayward secured three more points for the Bruins. The Bruins continued to tighten their defense and improve their offense, and at the end of the third quarter, they outscored the Scots 20-19.

As the fourth quarter got underway, the Bruins put together another strong effort and worked to chip away at their deficit. In the final frame, the Bruins shot over 68% to record 28 points and hold the Scots to just 13.

The Bruins were unable to complete the comeback and at the final buzzer fell to the Scots 71-64.

Following the game, Head Coach Mike LeViere said, "we dug a hole for ourselves and made too many mistakes for us to overcome, and that's the game right there."

"In the second half, we made some adjustments and came out with more assertiveness on defense and were able to pressure better, and I think that effected their ability to score. On the flip side, we took care of the ball, didn't make silly passes, and executed offensively being in the game."

With the loss, the Bruins sit at 1-1 on the season. They'll look to bounce back on Saturday as they take on Columbia International University in a 3 p.m. contest in the Davis Field House after an exhibition on the road against Appalachian State University on Friday.
