Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Trenton Goldsmith

Heartbreaker for the Bruins in the Region Final

It was a heart-breaking finish for the Bruins as they fall short in an overtime thriller against the Toccoa Falls Screaming Eagles 3-2.

"First and foremost, congratulations to Toccoa Falls," Head Coach Greg Fulton began. "But ultimately, this game came down to not finishing our chances and that is what we have to look at when we look in the mirror."

Everyone knew going into this game that it was going to be an intense battle the whole time. The expectation was delivered on. At the opening whistle, Toccoa Falls was in attack-mode and tried to put away a goal to gain an early lead, but the Bruins defense alleviating those threats in the first five minutes. The Bruins then had several chances of their own to score, but just could not finish and find the back of the net. Toccoa Falls made them pay in the 27th minute when they won a penalty kick that was put in giving the Screaming Eagles the 1-0 lead. The Bruins fought and fought with nine first half shots but came up empty with all of them, and they went into halftime with a one goal deficit.

As the second half began, the intense fog started to settle in at Alumni Stadium and it became very hard to see. Before it got too heavy, the Bruins won themselves a penalty kick in which David Issa scored to tie the match at 1-1. Just a few minutes later in the 59th minute, Toccoa Falls took the lead right back. It was shortly after this lead change that the fog became too thick and interfered with the vision of players, coaches, refs, and spectators. With just over 27 minutes left in regulation, the match came to a halt for a fog delay.

After it became clear enough, the match resumed and so did it's intensity. It did not take the Bruins much time to tie it back up. Asher Aurednik was able to put the ball past the keeper to tie it 2-2 in the 64th minute. For the remainder of the match, it felt as if the Bruins were going to have a game-winning goal with as many scoring opportunities that they had. Unfortunately, they could not capitalize and regulation ended with a 2-2 score.

The match then went into overtime which was played as "golden goal." That means if a team scores, the match it over and the scoring team triumphs. The first 10-minute period was controlled by the Bruins and they had several chances come up empty again. The second period of overtime gave chances to both teams, but it seemed like it was going to go to a penalty kick shootout. But with just over 30 seconds left, Toccoa Falls was given a penalty kick. They scored and won the region championship 3-2, breaking the Bruins' hearts.

"We have a gifted team," said Coach Fulton. "It hasn't been an easy season, though, but we have to learn. If we waste this opportunity to grow, that would be the real tragedy in a moment like this."

The Bruins now await the NCCAA voting committee in hopes that they receive the at-large big for the national tournament coming shortly in just a couple weeks.
