The Bob Jones University Bruins couldn't overcome a low-scoring second half on Tuesday night, falling 56-41 to the Columbia International University Rams in Columbia, South Carolina. With today's loss, the Bruins now sit at 4-4 on the season.
As today's game got underway, the Bruins kept pace with the Rams as the two teams exchanged baskets early. CIU then went on a 10 point scoring spree to pull ahead to a nine point advantage over the Bruins. The Bruins responded with run of their own to cut the deficit to just three points. A layup by Diamynd Buckson wrapped up the opening quarter as the Rams led 18-14.Â
Strong offense by the Bruins in the start of the second quarter saw them pull to a five point lead. Their lead held until 3:13 remaining in the first half when the Rams tied it and then took the lead. It remained close through the final minutes, but the Bruins trailed 33-29 going into halftime.Â
The game shifted out of halftime as the Bruins struggled to find the basket. BJU shot just 1-11 from the field in the third quarter while CIU capitalized with a 13-4 period, building a double-digit lead the Bruins couldn't overcome.
In the fourth quarter, the Rams held the Bruins without a basket for over seven minutes until a layup by Caitlyn Dickerson broke the drought. Three-pointers by Faith Hayward and Anna Layne Wylder wrapped up the scoring for Bob Jones in the team's 56-41 loss.Â
"As we talked at halftime, evidently a turkey hangover is a real thing," said Head Coach Mike LeViere following today's game. "We couldn't get in sync the entire game and there were an amazing amount of turnovers playing a team that doesn't press or pressure defense."
He continued saying, "I don't know of one area of the game that we were excellent in tonight. We were out hustled and out-rebounded. We didn't take good shots. We didn't run the floor on offense or defense. We didn't make good reads or good decisions with the ball. I told the team we just need to be "us" and it never felt like we got there. A game like tonight is frustrating and will test our character to see if we can learn from the failure and move on or simply let it continue to affect us."
The Bruins will look to regroup as they continue their road stretch with a game at Brevard College on Friday.Â
