Fourth Quarter Rally Falls Short as Bruins Fall in Final Seconds 63-62

A fourth quarter comeback came up short as the Bob Jones University Bruins fell in the final seconds Monday night, as the Sewanee Tigers converted a late jumper to edge the Bruins 63-62 inside the Davis Field House. With today's game, the Bruins now sit at 4-5 on the season.

BJU opened their final home game of the semester with one of its strongest first quarters of the season. The Bruins moved the ball well and knocked down four three-pointers to build a 23-15 lead after the opening frame.

In the second quarter, both teams struggled to make their baskets. BJU went just 1-for-18 from the field, while Sewanee managed only two made baskets. At the end of 20 minutes of play, the Tigers trimmed the Bruins lead to 25-21 at halftime.

Out of the halftime break, Sewanee scored the opening five points to knot the score at 25 before Anna Layne Wylder dropped a three-pointer to regain the slight lead. Throughout the quarter, the Tigers looked to build out a lead. In the final 45 seconds, free throws by Imani Pouncey and a jumper by Keely Price pulled the Bruins within four points.

In the final quarter, Sewanee extended its lead to 10 through the first four minutes. The Bruins answered with a nine point run started with a three pointer from Anna Layne Wylder. Wylder sank another shot from outside the arc for the game-tying bucket with 2:49 remaining. Price gave the Bruins their first lead of the half with a pair of free throws at 2:12, then added back-to-back layups to push the Bruins ahead 62-58 with just over a minute to play. But  Sewanee answered with a three-point shot and jumper in the final seconds to take the game 63-62.

Price led the Bruins with a double double of 20 points and 14 rebounds. Wylder finished with 14 points, all coming from the perimeter, while Caitlyn Dickerson and Faith Hayward each added seven.

"While it stings to come out on the short end tonight, it feels like we are competing really well, which is great," said Head Coach Mike LeViere. "We were down by 10 with six minutes left in the game, and we came up with some big defensive stops and followed it up with some good looks on the offensive side and ended up taking the lead. We gave us a chance to win, and that is what we want."

LeViere continued saying, "in an oxymoronic moment, I told the team that the most positive takeaway for me was how much we have to improve on. We made so many mistakes that we know we will be improving on and any one of those changes will result in us being that much better and coming out ahead on the scoreboard. We've had some great, competitive games the last two outings, and we need to continue that. As we continue to mature and get healthy, we are only going to get better every day."

The Bruins return to action on Saturday with an exhibition at the University of Greensboro.
