The Bruins will play in the South Region Championship tomorrow after defeating the Trinity Baptist College Eagles 92-78.
"We had huge contributions from everyone," Head Coach Burton Uwarow said. "That's the highest foul count against us in a couple of years and we needed everyone to contribute."
The Bruins opened up the game red hot on offense and got out to an early 12 point lead! Freshman Braxton Murray started this game on fire and scored 10 points in the first half. Even though the Bruins had a big lead, the Eagles were able to go on a run themselves to bring it back in a hurry. The game was tied 20-20 with just under nine minutes to go in the half. From then until the end of the half, the largest lead for either team was three points. Devin Dean and Devin Pope also added 10 points in the half and at the halftime buzzer, the game was tied 38-38.
The second half started a lot like the first half did, but the Bruins kept their foot on the gas. The Bruins took the lead and never looked back. They led the entire second half. Devin Pope proved why he was named the Region Player of the Year scoring 18 in the second half while shooting at a perfect rate of 7-7. He finished the game with 28 points leading all scorers. Devin Dean continued to have strong drives to the rim and scored 10 additional points in the second half ending the night with 20 points. Even through slight foul trouble, the Bruins kept control and dominated until the end of the game. The final score was 92-78.
Pope and Dean led the team, but there were also three more Bruins players scoring double-digits tonight. Braxton Murray finished with 16 which is a career-high! Trevor Brunson and Shad Vander Hart both added 12 points to the Bruins efforts. Vander Hart finished with 12 rebounds which was the most in the game.
"Devin Dean and Tostadas Pouncey played like experienced seniors off the bench," said Coach Uwarow.Â
The Bruins showed their pure strength tonight as they were able to score 92 points while only knocking down one three-pointer.Â
After this semifinal win, the Bruins will now play the Toccoa Falls College Screaming Eagles in the South Region Championship tomorrow at 3:00 p.m. in the Davis Field House!
"Toccoa Falls is riding a hot streak and will be really tough to beat. I hope we have enough left in the tank to have a great game tomorrow," Coach Uwarow said.
