The women's soccer team remains undefeated this season as they played to another 0-0 draw against Meredith College to open their weekend in Rocky Mount, North Carolina.
"I'm proud of the team for the effort they gave today and the improvement we had in possession and ball movement in the attacking third," said Head Coach Chris Carmichael. "I thought we controlled much of the game and created a bunch of great scoring opportunities. The coaching staff will need to work hard to help the team improve in these areas, but it's a process, and we are on a good path to get there.
He continued saying, "we have a ton of potential and it's just a matter of time until we have a breakout game and things begin clicking, but at this time we are resolved and committed to having another successful season. The good news is that we are still undefeated, but we need to start putting the ball into the back of the net. But we are starting to create a bunch of great opportunities."
As the game got underway, the Bruins and Avenging Angels took to the pitch for their fifth meeting. In the first half of the game, the Bruins took four shots looking for the first goal of their season, but after 45 minutes of play, the two teams remained knotted at zero.
With time ticking down in the second frame, the Bruins looked to make a few more moves. The offense worked in front of the net as Shannon Miller crossed the ball on frame, but the goalkeeper stepped up for the save. With under 10 minutes remaining, Abby Arrowood sailed the ball towards the net, but it went just over the crossbar.Â
At the buzzer, neither team was able to score as the game ended in a 0-0 draw.
"It was a tough, well-fought game. and even though it ended 0-0, I'm really proud of the girls and the way we battled, especially at the end," said Estrella Cruz. "The energy was great, and I feel really good about where we're at heading into tomorrow's game and the rest of the season going forward. There were lots of positives to take away."
Following the game, Julia Hartzler commented saying, "every player contributed, creating more opportunities on goal and dominating possession overall. With it being the second game of the season, we are making great progress in our buildup. I am looking forward to finishing out the weekend strong."
The Bruins look to build off of today's game as they wrap up their road trip on Saturday with a 2 p.m. kickoff against North Carolina Wesleyan in Rocky Mount, North Carolina.
