The second half effort came up just short for the Bruins tonight as they fell to the Truett McConnell University Bears 3-2 at Alumni Stadium.
"I left the game incredibly proud of the fight," Head Coach Greg Fulton said. "We're trying to figure out formation and different puzzles that we have within the team. After we made a switch in the second half, we started to climb back into the game."
The first half was a frustrating half for the Bruins. Being outshot 17-3, they managed to only allow two goals. The Bruins did create several goal-scoring opportunities but struggled to get shots from them. Truett McConnell's first goal came in the 27th minute when they worked it around the Bruins defense. After the Bears' second goal in the 36th minute, the Bruins went into halftime down 2-0.
The second half started and the Bears started to attack again. They were able to jump out to a 3-0 lead just a minute into the second half. The Bruins did not stop fighting, and after an adjustment was made, the Bruins found control. The first big chance for the Bruins to cut into the lead was in the 52nd minute when the Bruins won a penalty kick, but the shot went wide and the score remained 3-0. The Bruins finally struck, though, in the 78th minute when a ball flicked on by Gerardo Gonzalez found Jackson Reinhard for a header goal. Even into the last minutes of the game, the Bruins fought. They won a free kick with just over a minute to go in the match. The freshman Bucky Provenzano was able to score off a great strike on the free kick from about 20 yards out. Down 3-2 with a minute left, the Bruins had one final effort to tie, but fell just short.
"We could feel the victory against a tough team," said Coach Fulton. "That's what we want is coaches. We know we can fight, build, battle, and go win a regional title."
The Bruins are back at Alumni Stadium Tuesday, September 16 as they host Tusculum University for a 7:00 p.m. kickoff.
