The Bob Jones University women's basketball team came up short in a disappointing 66-63 loss to NCCAA DII South Region opponent Trinity College of Jacksonville on Monday down in Jacksonville, Florida. With today's result, the Bruins now sit at 4-6 on on the season and 1-1 in region play.
As today's game got underway, Keely Price opened the scoring with a layup off her own rebound. The Eagles then went on a 14 point run before a three-pointer by Peyton Teague ended the scoring drought with 5:45 left in the opening quarter. At the end of the first 10 minutes, the Bruins trailed TCJ 21-10.
Faith McClary sank her basket from outside the arc to open the scoring in the second quarter. Despite turnovers and several missed free throws in the first half, the Bruins worked to cut down the deficit. A late game jump shot by Faith Hayward pulled the Bruins within eight heading into halftime.
The Bruins looked to start off the third quarter strong with a three-point basket by Jenna Brooks. The team continued to work to cut down the deficit and with 6:49 remaining they pulled within one off a layup by Imani Pouncey. The Bruins tied the game 42-42 with just over four minutes left in the third. Soon after, a jump shot by Hayward gave the Bruins their first lead since the opening basket. At the end of 30 minutes of play, the Eagles regained a 49-47 lead.
Jenna Brooks put the Bruins back on top 50-49 with her quarter-opening three-point basket. Pouncey knocked down another shot from outside the arc to respond to a bucket by the Eagles. With just minutes remaining, the Eagles pulled ahead to a five point advantage. As the clock ran out, the Bruins were unable to take back the lead as they fell 66-63 to Trinity.
Following the game, Head Coach Mike LeViere shared his thoughts. "Today was a disappointing result. We had some really good practices leading up to this game, and I anticipated a better performance. We seemed to be frantic for some reason. There weren't a lot of smart basketball plays made on that court tonight, and it's frustrating for us to see that happen."
He continued saying, "we know we're better than that. We've got to address what needs to be addressed and get better quickly. We have a really good opponent coming to us this Saturday and the effort displayed tonight will earn us an embarrassing result come Saturday."
Up next, the Bruins are back home on Saturday evening for another matchup against region rival Pensacola Christian College.
