Bruins Upset Eagles to Advance to Region Championship Game

The Bob Jones University women's basketball team punched its ticket to the NCCAA South Region Championship game Thursday afternoon with a 63-59 win over Trinity College of Jacksonville in Toccoa Falls, Georgia.

The Bruins entered Thursday's semifinal match as the #3 seed ready to face off against the #2 Eagles. This season, the Bruins were 0-2 against Trinity College of Jacksonville after losing in very close contests. As today's semifinal game got underway, it proved to be another tight matchup between the two region teams.

It was a slow start for the Bruins as Trinity College of Jacksonville went on a 6-0 run to open the contest before a layup by Anna Layne Wylder put the Bruins on the board. The Bruins struggled offensively and the lead built for the Eagles. A late three-pointer from Faith McClary cut the deficit to 12-8 after the first quarter of play.

Savannah Taylor opened the second frame with two made free throws to cut the deficit to just two points before a jumper by Jenna Brooks tied the game at 12 points apiece. Wylder gave the Bruins their first lead with a three-pointer at the 7:37 mark. Keely Price followed with a triple to stretch the margin to four, the team's largest lead of the half. Trinity responded with a late surge, closing the half on a 6-0 run to take a 28-22 lead into the break.

After halftime, the Bruins got the scoring started with back-to-back baskets by Price and Wylder. With 6:23 remaining in the third quarter, Wylder sank another three-pointer to put the Bruins in the lead. This would be the only lead of the quarter as the Eagles responded. The Bruins worked hard to keep it close and at the end of the third quarter trailed by just two at 44-42.

In the final ten minutes of the game, the Bruins delivered its best shooting performance of the game, going seven of ten from the field in the fourth quarter. After Trinity built a 53-48 lead midway through the fourth, the Bruins responded with several timely baskets. The two teams continued to rally back and forth, and with just a minute left in the game, a layup by Price followed by a three-pointer from Wylder sealed the 63-59 win for the Bruins.

Following the game, Assistant Coach Sha'Ron Brunson said, "it was a good team win today. We stayed composed and finished down the stretch. We'll have a quick recharge and will be back at it again tomorrow."

The Bruins will face off against the winner of Thursday's semifinal game between #1 Pensacola Christian College and #4 Toccoa Falls College at 1 p.m. in Toccoa Falls, Georgia for their chance to take their fourth NCCAA South Region championship title.
