Insurance as a Student-Athlete at Bob Jones University
All BJU students covered under a health insurance policy through a parent and/or legal guardian, are REQUIRED to report this to the University through documentation provided by Student Health Services and/or Bruins Sports Medicine, in the case of a student-athlete. It is the responsibility of the student to notify the University or the Bruins Sports Medicine Department if your insurance coverage has been dropped or has changed during the year.
As part of your required student fees, basic student accidental insurance coverage is now provided to all BJU students. Bruin student-athletes are covered under an additional student-athlete accident insurance policy that supplements a student-athlete's primary insurance in any instance that an athletic injury is sustained during conditioning, practice, or competition of their sport. In the event a student-athlete does not have primary insurance, the student-athlete accident insurance policy will act as their primary insurance. The student-athlete accident insurance policy begins its coverage of a student AFTER the student has been medically cleared to participate as a Bruin student-athlete. Therefore, students who require further medical evaluation or follow up to be medically cleared to become a Bruins student-athlete are financially responsible for any medical visits and or treatments they have incurred to meet that requirement.
For claims to be processed through the University's student-athlete accident insurance, medical claims must first be filed to a student's primary insurance, and then any remaining balance is submitted to the athletic accident insurance provider. It is the student athlete's responsibility to submit a copy of any outstanding bills and/or the explanation of benefits (EOB) from the student's primary insurance provider to the Bruins Athletic Trainer for them to submit to the student accident insurance provider. Failure to submit one or both of these items will result in medical claims NOT being paid by the student-athlete accident insurance provider and will result in the student-athlete being financially responsible for payment of any remaining balances.
If a student-athlete has a medical emergency while participating in their team activity, and is later found to have a medical diagnosis that is not considered to be an injury or illness caused by sports participation (e.g. heart complications, organ complications, general sicknesses, etc.), the initial medical response/ evaluation (i.e. ambulance transportation and or emergency room visit) will be covered under the student-athlete accident insurance policy, and any follow up medical visits and or treatments will be the financial responsibility of the student-athlete. We recommend that each student-athlete have primary insurance of their own to cover these possible medical situations.
